"My husband and I are considering private school. Is the cost really worth it?"

It depends. While education is the best investment you’ll ever make, and investing in your child’s education is wise, there are considerations to be made before deciding to pay private school tuition.
Prior to the 1970’s, traditional education consisted mainly of public school. Private and parochial schools were available, but options were limited. Today, there are many excellent choices in elementary and secondary education. Charter schools, magnet schools, private schools, independent schools, public schools, homeschools, homeschool co-ops, and private homeschools.
There are several questions to ask before deciding on any type of school for your student.
What type of school reflects our family’s values?
What type of education do we want our student to have?
What are our financial considerations?
How far are we willing to drive for school?
What type of influence do we want in our student’s education?
Making a decision about your child’s education is a deeply personal one. Taking into account the five questions above will help your family come to a better understanding of your needs and desires. As you contemplate choices, it is appropriate to visit the school and talk to the principal, Head of School, or counselor. Many schools have Open House days which encourage visitors to tour the facility or sit in on classes. Talk to parents, teachers, and students enrolled. Exhaust your resources! While consistency in an educational environment is desired, it is important to note that factors can change which could lead to switching schools.
Whatever your choice in your child’s education, be involved! Know classroom expectations, curriculum, and make an effort to know your student’s teachers. Be present. If you work, volunteer to grade papers or complete computer work in the evening or on weekends. Your presence and your support of your child’s school and the adults who serve there is one of the most important factors in the way your student views and values education.
